A Study on Communication and Marital Satisfaction according to Gender Role Attitudes in Middle-Aged Couples

Abstract
Purpose : This study was aimed to investigate the degree of communication and marital satisfaction according to gender role attitudes in middle-aged couples.

Subjects : The participants of the study were 373 middle-aged couples.

Method : Data collection was carried out May 2 through July 30 2005. Data were collected by self-reporting questionnaires from 373 middle-aged couples who lived in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Kyungnam, and Kyungpook province. The instruments for this study were Osmond and Martin¡¯s Gender Role Attitudes Scale, Olson, Sprenkle and Russel¡¯s ENRICH Inventory, Frazier and Bowden¡¯s Marital Satisfaction Scale. The data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient using SPSS of window version 12.0.

Results : The results of this study were as follows.
1) The each mean of gender role attitudes, communication and marital satisfaction were 3.67, 3.79, and 5.05.
2) The degree of communication according to the gender role attitudes had shown that the couples of modern gender role attitudes were higher than the other groups.
3) The degree of marital satisfaction according to the gender role attitudes also had shown that the couples of modern gender role attitudes were higher than the other groups.
4) There were significant differences in gender role attitudes according to gender, age, type of marriage, same hobby, and same religion of general characteristics. There were significant differences in communication according to age, type of marriage, same hobby, and same religion of general characteristics. There were significant differences in marital satisfaction according to gender, type of marriage, same hobby, and same religion of general characteristics.
5) Communication had a significant correlation with marital satisfaction.

Conclusion : The results suggested that the couples of modern gender role attitudes were higher satisfaction of marriage and better communication mutuality than the other groups. Especially, modern gender role attitude of husband have an effect on good relationship of couple. Therefore, development of nursing program focus on modern gender role attitudes is needed.
